Time tracking inside Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants

Connect InstaClock once. Then tell the assistant what you're working on, log the hour you forgot, or ask where the week went.

In practice

What you can ask

Plain requests, in your own words. The assistant picks the activity by name and asks you to choose when two names are close.

“Start a timer for Deep work.”

Starts Deep work. If another timer was running, it stops at the same moment.

“Log 45 minutes of Reading from 9:00 to 9:45 this morning.”

Adds a finished entry. A running timer keeps going.

“How much did I track this week, by activity?”

Totals from Monday to today, split by activity and by day.

“Change yesterday's 2pm entry to Writing.”

Moves the entry to another activity. Start and end times can be fixed the same way.

“Create an activity called Spanish.”

Adds it to your activities, ready to time.

“Am I on track with my weekly goals?”Pro

Each goal with the time so far, what's left or over, and whether it's on track or behind.

“What did my weekly review say about last week?”Pro

Summarises the AI review InstaClock wrote for the last finished week.

Set it up

Server URLhttps://api.instaclock.app/mcp

You need an InstaClock account first. Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in can connect with this URL.

Claude

Web and desktop
  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it InstaClock and paste the server URL. Leave the client ID and secret empty.
  3. Click Add, then Connect, and approve the access request when InstaClock opens.
  4. Turn the connector on in a chat from the tools menu.

Free Claude plans allow one custom connector.

Claude Code

Run this in a terminal, then type /mcp inside Claude Code to sign in:

claude mcp add --transport http instaclock https://api.instaclock.app/mcp

ChatGPT

Developer mode
  1. Turn on Developer mode under Settings → Connectors → Advanced.
  2. Choose Create, name it InstaClock, paste the server URL and set authentication to OAuth.
  3. Create the connector and approve the access request when InstaClock opens.
  4. In a chat, open the tools menu, turn on Developer mode and pick InstaClock.

Developer mode is in beta and may require a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.

Codex

App and CLI
  1. In the Codex app, open Settings → MCP servers → Add server.
  2. Name it instaclock, choose Streamable HTTP and paste the server URL.
  3. Save, restart, then click Authenticate next to the server and approve the request.

Or from the terminal (the app, CLI and IDE extension share this config):

codex mcp add instaclock --url https://api.instaclock.app/mcp
codex mcp login instaclock

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project), then click Connect next to instaclock in Settings → MCP to sign in:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "instaclock": {
      "url": "https://api.instaclock.app/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Gemini CLI

Run this in a terminal, then type /mcp auth instaclock inside Gemini CLI:

gemini mcp add --transport http instaclock https://api.instaclock.app/mcp

Grok

  1. Go to grok.com/connectors and choose New connector → Custom.
  2. Paste the server URL and approve the access request when InstaClock opens.
  3. Grok finds the tools itself. Turn the connector on in your next chat.

Custom connectors need a paid Grok plan.

Perplexity

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Custom connector.
  2. Pick the remote option, paste the server URL, choose OAuth and approve the access request when InstaClock opens.

Available on Perplexity Pro, Max and Enterprise.

How the connection works

01

You approve it.

Connecting opens an InstaClock sign-in page. The assistant gets access only after you approve it there.

02

It sees your account only.

The connection covers your own activities, time entries, goals and weekly reviews. It can't see anyone else's time or change your plan.

03

It asks before deleting.

InstaClock tells the assistant to check with you before it deletes an entry or a goal, or archives an activity.

04

You can disconnect it.

Settings → Connected apps lists every assistant you've connected. Disconnecting one removes its access.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track time in ChatGPT?
Yes. Add InstaClock as a custom connector in ChatGPT's Developer mode, using the server URL https://api.instaclock.app/mcp and OAuth. Developer mode is in beta and may require a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. Once it's connected, you can start timers, log entries and ask for summaries in the chat.
Does InstaClock work with Claude?
Yes. On claude.ai and Claude Desktop, add it under Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector; free Claude plans allow one custom connector. In Claude Code, run "claude mcp add --transport http instaclock https://api.instaclock.app/mcp" and sign in with /mcp.
What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools from other apps. InstaClock runs an MCP server at https://api.instaclock.app/mcp, so any assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in can connect to it.
Is the connector included in the Free plan?
Yes. Timers, time entries, activities and summaries work on every plan. Checking or setting goals and reading AI weekly reviews need Pro.
Can the assistant see other people's time?
No. It only works with the InstaClock account you signed in with when you connected it.
Which timezone does it use?
The timezone in your InstaClock profile. Weeks start on Monday, so "this week" means Monday to today.
How do I disconnect an assistant?
Open Settings → Connected apps in InstaClock and choose Disconnect next to it. You can also remove InstaClock from the assistant's own connector settings.

Connect the assistant you already use.

Create a free InstaClock account, then follow the steps for your assistant above.
